WIPO Re:Search

Connecting Industry Assets and Researchers to Drive Neglected Disease R&D

WIPO Re:Search is a global consortium founded by BVGH, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and leading pharmaceutical companies. The aim of the Consortium is to accelerate the development of new drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), malaria, and tuberculosis through the sharing of intellectual property (IP).

Consortium membership includes academic and nonprofit research institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies committed to addressing the unmet medical needs of the developing world. The 120+ Members represent 30+ countries from six continents, including 25+ African institutions.

BVGH identifies and facilitates partnerships that share intellectual property assets such as compounds, data, technology, samples, expertise, and advice among Consortium members to advance R&D for NTDs, malaria, and tuberculosis.

BVGH's Role

BVGH’s leadership is critical to the Consortium’s success. As the Partnership Hub Administrator, BVGH proactively examines scientists’ current neglected disease research and proposes novel collaboration opportunities with other Members. BVGH also fields requests from researchers, identifies Member organizations able to fulfill these requests, and helps forge mutually beneficial collaborations with clearly-defined roles, responsibilities, and expectations.

Developing New Drugs to Tackle Malaria Resistance

Drug resistance threatens progress in the battle against malaria. To enable discovery of new antimalarials, Merck & Co., Inc., Kenilworth, NJ, USA (known as MSD outside of the US and Canada) shared aspartyl protease inhibitors with researchers from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI), Australia. With Wellcome Trust Pathfinder Award support, Merck & Co. and the WEHI researchers are developing compounds targeting plasmepsin V, a key parasite enzyme.
