Located in Sub Saharan Africa just South of the Equator, the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) is the largest country in East Africa. With a gross domestic product of $66.1 billion, Tanzania’s economy is mostly reliant on agriculture. Cancer is the second leading cause of non-communicable disease-related deaths in the URT, with breast, cervical, prostate, and colorectal cancers accounting for almost half (49.8%) of new cancer cases in 2020.

In 2023, Tanzania’s Ministry of Health launched its five-year Bankable Project, which outlines the country’s plan to address cancer mortality by enhancing existing radiotherapy services and establishing new radiotherapy centers. The Bankable Project builds upon Tanzania’s Cancer Prevention and Control Program, which aims to improve public education, increase early cancer detection and diagnosis, and optimize treatment services and patient care.
