Clinical Trial Regulation in Africa Strengthened Through Digital Training

2024 Clinical Trial Regulation and Ethics digital course attendees

In partnership with Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), BVGH organized and led a 12-lecture digital training program on clinical trial regulation and ethics. The course, which was designed to support NAFDAC’s clinical trial review practices and to equip African researchers with the tools to conduct safe and effective research, attracted more than 2,730 participants from 73 countries globally – including 2,649 participants from 42 African countries. Experts from the United States Food and Drug Administration, MD Anderson, Sarah Cannon Research Institute, and Takeda (USA); Health Canada and Princess Margaret Cancer Center (Canada); National Health Research Ethics Committee (Nigeria); Ghana Food and Drugs Authority (Ghana); and UK Health Research Authority (UK) covered topics prioritized by NAFDAC, including clinical trial protocol evaluation, good clinical practice inspection processes and corrective measures, ethics review board responsibilities and human subjects protections, and artificial intelligence in clinical trials.

This course built upon a ten-lecture series led by BVGH and NAFDAC in 2022, which focused on clinical trial protocol evaluation.

“Thanks BVGH for this privilege extended to me to learn the nitty gritty of clinical trials. My knowledge has been ungraded and my skills on the subject matter have been extremely enhanced. The training materials and recorded sessions would be a great reference for my practice. Thanks to all the facilitators who found time out of their tight schedules to train us.”

– Paul Hassan Ilegbusi, Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director (Community Health), Ondo State College of Health Technology, Akure, Nigeria
