Infectious diseases disproportionately burden people living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). BVGH forges and manages multinational public-private partnerships to catalyze infectious disease research innovation and expand the capabilities of LMIC scientists to conduct high-quality research aligned with local and regional needs.

Global Innovation Alliance (GIA)
The Global Innovation Alliance (GIA) builds on BVGH’s 15+ years of infectious disease partnering, alliance management, and capacity building expertise and successes—through initiatives including WIPO Re:Search and the Pool for Open Innovation Against Neglected Tropical Diseases (POINT)—to:
- Catalyze early-stage, LMIC-driven research and development (R&D) partnerships.
- Build and promote clinical trial capabilities and inclusion in LMICs.
- Elevate scientific expertise in LMICs.
- Champion awareness of and commitments to addressing infectious diseases in LMICs.
Global Innovation Alliance Network of Trial Sites (GIANTS)

The conduct of high-quality clinical trials in LMICs is vital for providing equitable access to healthcare innovations and ensuring that products, technologies, and practices are safe and effective in LMICs’ diverse populations. However, too few LMIC healthcare facilities have experience conducting clinical trials, and many LMICs are significantly underrepresented in clinical trials.
Under the purview of GIA, BVGH established the GIA Network of Trial Sites (GIANTS) to build and promote infectious disease clinical trial capabilities and inclusion in LMICs through:
- Training programs.
- Facilitation of clinical trial partnerships between LMIC investigators and international collaborators.
- Publication of LMIC sites’ clinical trial readiness profiles—showcasing institutional capabilities and priorities, as well as the expertise and interests of individual investigators—on BVGH’s GIANTS Online Platform.

WIPO Re:Search
WIPO Re:Search was an international public-private consortium co-led by BVGH and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Through the Consortium, BVGH catalyzed cross-sector, intellectual property-sharing R&D collaborations and capacity building fellowships to drive innovation for neglected tropical diseases, malaria, and tuberculosis.
After ten years, WIPO Re:Search came to a close at the end of 2022. Click below to view BVGH’s WIPO Re:Search archives.
