Attendees of the community awareness training workshop
More than half of Côte d’Ivoire’s cancer patients are diagnosed with late-stage malignancies. Awareness of cancer symptoms and the timely engagement of primary care providers are key factors that promote earlier diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients. Primary care providers (PCPs), community health workers (CHWs), and community leaders are essential to ensuring that members of the public are informed about cancer symptoms, when and how to seek health advice, and where to receive a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
In an effort to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality in Côte d’Ivoire, BVGH partnered with the country’s National Cancer Control Program (PNLCa) to lead a 3-day workshop that convened more than 80 PCPs, CHWs, community chiefs, and religious leaders from across the country to strengthen their knowledge and awareness of colorectal, prostate, and hematologic cancers. Attendees gained newfound tools and skills that will enable them to discuss cancer with members of their communities and advise their patients on cancer prevention, risk factors, and diagnostic and treatment pathways.
