Tumor boards enable a multidisciplinary team of healthcare experts – including oncologists, nurses, pathologists, radiologists, surgeons, and more – to review complex cancer cases and identify the most effective treatment strategy for those patients. While routinely practiced in the USA since the 1990s, the use of multidisciplinary tumor boards is relatively new in Africa. Recognizing the need for consistent and thorough use of multidisciplinary tumor boards, AAI hospital leaders in Nigeria asked for BVGH’s support in strengthening the hospital staff’s tumor board management skills. In response, BVGH developed and led a 4-lecture digital training program. The course, AAI Fundamentals of Tumor Board
Management, was designed for multidisciplinary care teams in Africa and attracted over 2,900 participants from 58 countries. Experts from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Mayo Clinic, Imperial College London, Barts Health, and Cincinnati Cancer Advisors delivered lectures on the structure and function of tumor boards, implementation strategies, and effective communication.
“Thank you so much for making this training available. You will not know how much it has equipped and stimulated me towards establishing a tumor board in my institution. Thank you so much.”
– Dr. Okechukwu Hyginus EKWUNIFE, Pediatric Surgeon at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Nigeria
