Due to the complex and varied anatomy of the head and neck, as well as the aggressiveness and heterogeneity of head and neck cancers, treatment of these malignancies is particularly challenging. Building on BVGH’s partnership with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Nigeria’s commitment to building the oncology workforce, BVGH organized a one-month observership in head and neck radiotherapy for Dr. Godwin Uwagba, a Consultant Clinical and Radiation Oncologist at the NSIA-LUTH Cancer Center (NLCC), Nigeria. Dr. Luqman Dad, Co-Director, Head and Neck Cancer Program and Director for Global Engagement and Outreach at Columbia University, USA, hosted and mentored Dr. Uwagba for a rigorous training program. While at Columbia, Dr. Uwagba interfaced and collaborated with leading experts in the head and neck cancer field and acquired hands-on training and experience that will significantly enhance his ability to deliver high quality care to his patients in Nigeria. During his visit, Dr. Uwagba attended the prestigious Head and Neck Cancer Symposium, where he networked and built connections with oncology specialists from across the U.S. and beyond. Dr. Uwagba returned to Nigeria equipped with new knowledge and skills that he is eager to share with colleagues and apply to his treatment of head and neck cancer patients at NLCC.
