BVGH and Partners Host Training to Advance Cancer Diagnostics in Nigeria

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and flow cytometry are essential tools for diagnosing cancers, yet their adoption in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains limited due to high costs and a shortage of trained personnel.

To support the expansion of diagnostic services in Nigeria, BVGH coordinated and ran a hands-on advanced pathology training program at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and Cerba Lancet. The training was conducted in partnership with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), MedServe, the MedServe-LUTH Cancer Center (MLCC), and LUTH, with additional support from Cerba Lancet, Beckman Coulter, and Roche.

Delivered by Dr. Steve Kussick and Ms. Kim Thompson of PhenoPath Laboratories (Seattle), the five-day program brought together over 40 pathologists, hematologists, and laboratory scientists from 13 public teaching hospitals across Nigeria. Participants received in-depth instruction on IHC and flow cytometry techniques; explored practical solutions to challenges in diagnosing blood and common solid tumors; and engaged in real-time lab exercises, case reviews, and workflow improvement sessions tailored to the needs of AAI partner hospitals.

This educational program was made possible through the sponsorship of Bayer AG MA-M_SOR-NG-0001-1
