Imaging Training to Transform Breast Cancer Patient Outcomes in Africa

Participants of the 2025 AAI Breast Cancer Early Detection and Referral Part 2 digital course

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Africa, claiming more than 91,000 lives in 2022 alone. A major contributor to this high mortality rate is the high frequency of late stage diagnoses. Access to routine screening mammograms and timely referrals for confirmatory imaging are essential to detecting breast cancer earlier, when treatment is more effective and survival rates are higher.

In partnership with Kenya’s National Cancer Control Program, BVGH led a 7-session digital training program for radiologists and radiographers in Africa. The 2025 AAI Breast Cancer Early Detection and Referral Part 2 digital course attracted more than 650 participants from 42 African countries and provided in-depth instruction on mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, ultrasound-guided biopsies, imaging quality control procedures, and more. By strengthening the skills of radiologists and radiographers, BVGH’s training program is helping Kenya and other African countries take a pivotal step toward improving breast cancer early detection and saving lives.
