A cancer diagnosis results in more than just medical challenges – it can be an overwhelming emotional, logistical, and financial burden for patients and their families. In response to requests from AAI hospital partners, BVGH developed a 5-session digital lecture series focused on psychosocial oncology. Delivered by experts from Germany, Kenya, Uganda, and the USA, the 2025 AAI Psychosocial Oncology digital training program explored the psychosocial impact of cancer; ethical, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of care; psychological interventions; caregiver support, and psycho-oncology research. Over 1,500 oncologists, nurses, and caregivers participated in the course, gaining practical tools to support patients’ mental well-being and improve their quality of life throughout their treatment journey.
“This course has been enriching, both personally and professionally. As a social worker supporting multiple myeloma patients and their caregivers in Kenya, I often encounter the emotional, psychological, and social burdens that come with a cancer diagnosis. This course provided a solid foundation in evidence-based psychosocial care, offering new perspectives on how better to support patients throughout various stages of their cancer journey.”
