Nigerian Oncology Staff Prepared to Launch Advanced Radiotherapy Services Nationwide

Eight international trainers from six institutions traveled to Lagos to provide their expertise in cutting edge radiation oncology.

Recognizing that approximately 60% of cancer patients require radiotherapy as a component of their treatment, the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare committed to equipping six cancer centers across the country’s geopolitical zones with state-of-the-art radiotherapy systems. Planning for the expansion of radiotherapy services, the Ministry directed the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and MedServe to prepare the cancer centers’ staff to use the new radiotherapy systems to deliver high-quality care.

BVGH partnered with MedServe to organize a comprehensive training program for more than 60 Nigerian radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists, and nurses. The training program consisted of two eight-week hands-on modules led by MedServe-LUTH Cancer Center staff, a one-week training capstone led by international experts, and over 130 hours of digital content developed by Rayos Contra Cancer.

Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. “The hands-on training is so fantastic, and I learned to have confidence in myself,” shared one participant. Another noted: “Thank you for the opportunity. So much has been done. Looking forward to such opportunities to improve the outcomes of patients’ care.”

This initiative underscores the power of strategic partnerships. By bringing together BVGH, MedServe, NSIA, Rayos Contra Cancer, international trainers, and Nigeria’s dedicated healthcare professionals, we are advancing cancer care equity and building sustainable capacity for the future.
