Child life practice can help improve the hospital experience for pediatric patients and families by reducing fear and distress, promoting coping, and fostering hope during treatment. At the request of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital’s (UATH) pediatrics team and in collaboration with the Burkitt’s Lymphoma Fund for Africa (BLFA) and Faber Daeufer & Itrato (now Crowell Life Sciences), BVGH coordinated a hybrid (in-person/virtual) child life practice training program to reduce pediatric cancer treatment abandonment at the hospital. Led by Mrs. Elizabeth Kabuthi, a Certified Child Life Specialist from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kenya, the AAI Child Life Practice training equipped over 20 pediatricians, nurses, mental health providers, and social workers with practical strategies to recognize distress, use play to ease children’s fears, and deliver more holistic, family-centered care. To support the implementation of child life practice at UATH, BVGH delivered toys and books to the pediatric ward playroom – helping to create a more engaging environment for pediatric patients during their time at the hospital.
